How to Get Your CPE Credits this Year

Author: Amanda Stein
Most accounting and tax professionals have to meet their continuing education requirements year after year. But before you start signing up for your courses this year, you should have a plan on how you are going to get those CPE credits.

Know the Requirements

CPE requirements are different for different people. A registered tax return preparer has different requirements than an Enrolled Agent. Both of those are set by the IRS. A CPA is going to have to meet the continuing education requirements set by the state he is licensed in. Therefore, before you pay for a course, you need to know how many credits you will receive. It is perfectly fine to take more than you need, but you have to meet the minimum.

Don't Forget Ethics

The CPE requirements often specify that a certain number of the hours must cover ethics. It is absolutely no use to take a lot of courses if you don't meet the ethics minimum requirements. That can cost you your license. And while ethics may not be the most exciting topic, you are going to have to choose a course that gives you credit for this. Otherwise, you will be in trouble later.

Find an Instructor

There are several different ways to meet your CPE requirements. You can sign up for a course with a qualified instructor in a classroom setting. You might even find a way to get all of your credits in one weekend this way. Plus, you will get to meet other professionals in your field. But you have to make sure that the course you choose will count for your purposes. You can find approved education sponsors through the IRS website.

CPE Online

Of course, there is another way to meet those CPE requirements: online. You can actually find continuing education courses on the internet. In order to make sure that you will receive credit for your work, you still need to verify that you have found an approved education sponsor.
There are a lot of benefits to working on your CPE credits online. Online courses will often give you study materials that you can keep. And not only does an online course allow you to complete your training at your own pace, but it also makes it very convenient. Plus, it saves you money, because you don't have to drive to the classroom. And you don't have to take time off from your job, either.
