Time Management Skills for Middle School Students

Author: Jessica Lane
During the middle school years, most students are learning the value of time management and of organizing tasks and projects to ensure their timely completion. Many of these students are still in the process of developing their own sense of self and may need added guidance to ensure that they manage schoolwork, extracurricular activities and responsibilities at home effectively. Student planners and agendas can provide valuable assistance in juggling the numerous responsibilities of modern middle school pupils. By providing these tools for their students, middle school administrators and teachers can create an environment conducive to developing advanced time management skills among these younger students.

Organizational Skills Begin in Childhood

School administrators can help to instill a sense of order into the daily routines of students through the use of customized student planners that complement the classroom instruction. For instance, schools that feature seven class periods each day should select a planner that corresponds to that schedule. Students can benefit from agendas and planners by learning to organize their tasks according to the period in which they are due. Additionally, by writing down upcoming homework assignments, testing dates and extracurricular activities and events, students can begin to take responsibility for their own schedules. This can provide a valuable sense of self-reliance that can serve these children well in their ongoing academic careers.

Time Management in the Middle School Environment

The first step in developing time management strategies in middle school is to begin writing down tasks and homework projects as they are assigned. Middle school personalized planners are usually designed to allow these assignments to be recorded in the specific hour slot in which they will be due. By compartmentalizing these tasks and writing down the date due for each homework project, students can begin to prioritize their work and create simple workflows to ensure that all assignments are completed on time.

Benefits for School Administrators and Teachers

Many companies can provide customized agendas and planners that allow teachers to communicate with parents on a daily basis. By requiring parents to sign or otherwise acknowledge receipt of the information recorded by students each day, teachers can increase parent involvement with the educational process. School administrators can also benefit by offering these cost-effective educational tools to the students under their care.

By choosing an appropriate and attractive student planner, schools can instill important time management principles in their students and can create a more productive environment within the school.
