2013 Content Marketing Truths- Finding relevant content for the B2B Domain is Hard!

Author: Rupa
‘Content is King', often said by SEO experts and overrated web writers who want you to understand the fact that populating the World Wide Web with carefully compiled content is akin to burying gold. Hoping that later on, your prospective online customers can ‘unearth' this treasure and connect your business to exactly what they are looking out for- be it a service or product. It's a slower process, but long lasting and more profitable.
By the looks of it however, the business to business (b2b) domain completely missed the bus when it comes to creating and deploying powerful online content. A simple Google search should attest to this fact. What you will likely find is webpage upon webpage of generic content that could as well have been compiled by a programmed monkey. The core topics are painfully ignored, attention to the basics is non-existent and the creative style of writing has jumped out the window ages ago!
What's the problem? Why must the B2B trading domain suffer from this lack of relevant online information? Do we need a reincarnated God to sort out this problem?
Maybe the various b2b marketplaces, directories, and a plethora of writers aren't trying hard enough. Or, is the b2b domain a complicated black hole which cannot be easily defined without seriously messing up with physics and the known universe?
We kid you not.
Explored here are some ideas that can help the b2b writer in you bring ideas to life, maybe dab a bit of makeup to it and present it to a very appreciative audience. Positive responses assured!!
Answer the Question to find a Follower
Remember that the fundamental reason that you are writing or posting content online is to hopefully catch the undivided attention of your prospective customer. Imagine that this customer had a b2b related query. Write an attractive, informative piece that explains the solution to this query in detail and link back to the original query as posted by the prospective customer across online mediums like blogs, forums etc. There, you have the client's undivided attention.
Quality grabs attention better than anything else
Write quality content. This is easier said than done but a system of thorough research and flawless understanding of your intended topic must help you produce quality. Never confuse quantity with quality- that's the chalk and cheese story. The quality of your content can be gauged through a simple test- read back the text the minute after you have completed the copy and atleast twelve hours after you have finished compiling the supposed masterpiece. If in either case your interest is sustained, you have a winner on your hand. Also, never take the logic and intelligence of your intended readers for granted.
Know your Competition to Know Yourself!
The common theory goes that all the small fishes in a pond are so busy looking at each other for survival tricks that they don't see the big fish approaching. Let this not be you. Understand from your peers by observing their content strategies but always add a dash of your individual creativity to take on your actual goals. While inspiration can get you so far- inspiration mixed with innovation is the killer combination.
Write for the Reader, not the Search Engine!
If you are aiming to write for a bot, convoluted jargons would be bliss (see what I did here?). However, your target reader is a human being and he likes to be informed, humoured and questioned. Avoid writing tons of content that is packed to the brim with keywords and other landing lights for the Google search bots- instead; include humour and honest observations to indulge your reader. Remember, this is a very personal conversation between just the two of you.
In summation- Learn, pray and proceed. Beautiful content shall remain beautiful forever; always encourage the charmed reader into indulging in your b2b product. Use your words carefully!!
