Educate a needy Child

Educate a Child
"For everyone everywhere, literacy is...a basic human right."
- Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General
The future of our world depends on our children. Knowledge feeds our minds and every child, irrelevant of their culture, color or ethnical background deserves the opportunity to be given an education and be taught the basics of LIFE 101.
Today, research reports have indicated that education remains an inaccessible right for millions of children around the world. Statistics have shown that more than 72 million children of primary education age are not in school and 759 million adults are illiterate and do not have the awareness necessary to improve both their living conditions and those of their children.
In developing and developed countries throughout Africa, children are not given the right to a basic education because of various factors such as inequalities that originate in sex, health, cultural identity (ethnic origin, language, religion) and poverty. These children are neglected in the education system and therefore do not benefit from learning that is extremely vital to their intellectual and social development.
Inevitably, factors linked to poverty such as unemployment, illness and the illiteracy of parents increase the risk of non-schooling and the drop-out rate of a child by 2. The fact remains, that many children from disadvantaged backgrounds are forced to abandon their education due to health problems related to malnutrition or in order to work and provide support for their family. This is the harsh reality of most children in Africa and that is why it is so crucially important to help provide an education for these youngsters.
By reducing the number of educated children in the community, there is a huge negative impact that effects the entire population and country. Lack of schooling and poor education impedes the social and economic development of these areas. A basic education should be mandatory and compulsory for all children despite their background.
Both boys and girls should be educated equally – the reality is that the education of girls is in jeopardy. Today, it is girls who have the least access to education and they make up more than 54% of the non-schooled population in the world.
Here are some statistics taken from Sub-Saharan Africa:
> More than 1 in 3 adults cannot read
> 176 million adults are unable to read and write
> 47 million youths (ages 15-24) are illiterate
> 21 million adolescents are not in school
> 32 million primary aged children are not in school either
Various organizations dedicate a lot of time, energy and resources to help combat the lack or non-existent educational system throughout Africa and around the world. But this requires the help of funding as the schooling system in Africa is extremely costly. The Solongo Rehabilitation Group are actively involved in helping these children receive sponsorship so that they may be given a chance to learn which will allow them to build a stronger foundation for their future.
